Brief
Venezuelan oil exports declined 9% in September as higher shipping rates disrupted tanker schedules and prompted route changes. The impact was most pronounced in Europe, where cargo volumes fell sharply. The United States strengthened its position as Venezuela’s leading oil destination after increasing its purchases. The shift shows how transport costs are influencing both overall export performance and the geographic mix of Venezuelan crude sales, with stronger U.S. demand partly offsetting weaker European flows.
The September decline indicates that shipping economics can constrain Venezuela’s ability to place crude abroad even when buyers remain available. Europe’s sharp pullback also increases reliance on the U.S. market, making export performance more sensitive to changes in that trade channel.

The next export report should show whether freight rates and tanker delays ease, and whether European shipments recover or the United States continues increasing its share of Venezuelan oil purchases.
