Venezuela’s engineering association is calling for an independent commission to revise the country’s earthquake-resistant construction standards. It also argues that any building that has collapsed or sustained severe damage should remain untouched until a qualified technical commission evaluates the structure and authorizes full or partial demolition or removal. The proposal puts technical oversight and updated building rules at the center of decisions involving damaged properties and future structural safety.
If adopted, updated seismic rules and independent structural reviews could reshape construction costs, permitting, insurance exposure and due diligence for Venezuelan real estate and infrastructure. The proposal also tests whether technical institutions can gain a formal role in managing damaged assets and enforcing safer standards.
