Brief
At least 14 of 36 residential towers built in Caracas by the now-defunct Presidential Office for Special Plans and Projects suffered partial destruction during the June 24, 2026 earthquakes. Although the buildings did not collapse, visible damage remains, according to an investigation by the Alianza Rebelde. The towers were constructed for the Gran Misión Vivienda Venezuela, the public housing program created under Hugo Chávez.
Damage across 14 state-built towers highlights the vulnerability of Caracas housing infrastructure to seismic shocks. Any finding that the buildings require extensive reinforcement or evacuation could create an unplanned public-sector repair burden and deepen concerns about construction standards in government housing projects.
